AMTRA Play, the Ambiophonics audio player creates a wide and deep sound stage, especially with a loudspeaker setup in a 20° separation angle instead of the 60° for Stereophonic playback. Mobile Stereo-Speakers are perfect for Ambiophonic playback to produce a more realistic sound field.
The app has been designed for playback through speakers and should not be used with headphones.
Full Version versus Test Version
The test version applies Ambiophonics to the first 30 seconds of each track. Please support us in buying the full version to get continuous Ambiophonics playback.
What is Ambiophonics and why should I care?
The most crucial difference between Ambiophonics and Stereophonics (Stereo) is the elimination of crosstalk and therefore the reduction of comb filtering and pinna direction finding errors. Well, we just hear a delayed signal from the right speaker with our left ear and vice versa, which causes the mentioned adverse effects.
Advantages of Ambiophonics:
- Elimination of Comb filtering effects and pinna direction finding errors.
- By having the speakers close together (20° Speaker Separation) reflections by walls and the bass mode response of the room are much easier to control.
- The center presence is very stable and therefore always easy to locate.
The sound stage gets a strong deepness, height and wideness, which creates a real 3D listening experience. Youre able to pinpoint each instrument in all dimensions.
To achieve optimal cross talk cancellation Ambiophonics has a sweet spot (similar to stereo) along the median line, where the sound stage has its best representation.
The most remarkable difference between Stereophonics and Ambiophonics is the loudspeaker setup. The classical 60° stereo triangle is replaced by a 20° loudspeaker separation called Ambiodipol.
The Recursive Ambiophonic Crosstalk Elimination (RACE) Algorithm ensures a 120° wide sound stage even with the loudspeakers that close together.
The RACE algorithm has been introduced by the Ambiophonics Institute: www.ambiophonics.org [ACHTUNG: Kein Hyper-Link].
What do I need to do to listen to Ambiophonics?
Place your loudspeakers in a separation angle of around 20° instead of the usual 60° for stereo reproduction. If you don’t want to move your HiFi-Speakers then just use mobile stereo speakers to enjoy Ambiophonics.
What are all these settings?
The RACE algorithm needs a couple of settings to work flawlessly.
We choose to set the default values in a way that there is no need to change anything for the standard 20° loudspeaker setup.
Nevertheless, if you want to optimize the settings for your speaker setup then just keep the following details in mind:
a.) The RACE Attenuation defines the amount of cross talk cancelation. A value of around -2.3dB is most likely optimal.
b.) The Delay sets the time when the cancellation signal, to eliminate the cross talk, is send out. That value depends on the speaker separation.
c.) To increase the mono part of the signal the Center value can be set accordingly.
Which records sound best?
In contrast to the standard stereo setup where spatially rich recordings that contain binaural cues with Interaural Time Differences (ITD) loose their deepness, Ambiophonics plays back a much richer sound stage.
Many productions mix monaural microphones or direct sources between channels to create phantom images limited to Interaural Level Differences (ILD), but even those recordings benefit from a wider and more precise sound stage.
